District Meeting/picnic

hosted by the Richmond Rose Society

DATE:  Saturday, September 24, 2022

TIME:  11 a.m. - 4:00 p.m


PLACE:  Connie and Steve Hilker’s garden, 335 Hartwood Road, Fredericksburg, VA  22406.

Event is RAIN or SHINE.  We have rented a large tent.

BRING:  a folding chair— please label with your name!  Guests are welcome!

FOOD:  We have contracted with a caterer who will provide our food.  The menu includes pulled pork barbeque, marinated chicken breasts, baked beans, potato casserole, cole slaw, rolls, and desserts.

COST:  The registration fee is $40 per person.  Registration deadline is Friday, September 9.


Teresa Byington (Former President and current VP of the Indianapolis Rose Society, Former director of the Illinois/Indiana District of the ARS, Blogger at TheGardenDiary.com, cohost of Rose Chat podcast).  Teresa will show us some of the history of English cottage gardening and take us on a mini tour of English gardens that she has visited. She will also lead a virtual tour of her cottage garden including a bit of her garden history along the way.

David Pike (President and CEO of Witherspoon Rose Culture in Durham, NC) David will give us a brief history of his company and will share his extensive rose experience in his program titled, ”The 5 Essentials for Growing Beautiful Roses”.

There will also be a garden walk, silent auction, raffle, and roses available for sale.  John and Cherylynn Smith will be presented with the Guy Blake Hedrick award for outstanding exhibiting.

HOTELS:  There are numerous hotels for our out-of-town guests to choose from at Exit 133 on I-95, which is 8 miles from the picnic location.  For this event, we have a block of rooms reserved at the Holiday Inn Express, 20 Sanford Drive, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22406.  The contracted room rate is $129/night plus tax.  For reservations, phone 540-368-8000 (reference Richmond Rose Society room block).  Deadline to reserve rooms at this rate is September 9.
